Peru

The Mi Buen Jesús School is located in Villa Maria del Triunfo approximately 1 1/2 hours from Lima. Director Raquel Yauli established this little school 15 years ago. He has made it his life mission to ensure that the poverty stricken 113 students aged 3-12 are given an opportunity to obtain an education at the school. The government provides no funding for the school, and Director Yauli is dependent on donations, fundraising activities and self generated resources for its efficient running.

On 17 July, Aspen Peru´s team left their formal attire at home and with boundless energy and enthusiasm headed to the school to make a real difference for the children. The team spent the morning refurbishing the classroom by painting it and repairing the damaged roof. The children were delighted to receive generous donations of rubber boots, toys, books and toiletry bags while the teachers each received a chair for their classroom. The celebrations were complete when special treats were shared and, all enjoyed the Mandela Day cake.

The Aspen team was deeply touched by the gratitude of the staff and children at Mi Buen Jesús School and their smiles brought much joy and a deep sense of appreciation for that which is taken for granted.
