In line with our commitment to social responsibility and making a sustainable impact, Beta joined the global movement to honor Nelson Mandela’s legacy by participating in meaningful service under this year’s theme: “It is in our hands to combat Poverty and Inequity”.

In 2024, we initiated a critical sanitation renovation project at Kenyatta National Hospital’s Pediatric Ward 3B, one of the busiest and most vital areas of care for children under the age of eight. Kenyatta National Hospital, founded in 1901, remains the largest referral hospital in East and Central Africa, with a workforce of over 7 000 staff, 50 wards and 16 specialised emergency departments.

The renovation project at Ward 3B benefits some 85 patients and commenced last year July 2024. The initial focus was to improving hygiene and sanitation infrastructure, aiming to support recovery, health and dignity for young patients and their caregivers.

In 2024 we embarked on improvements by painting the ward, attending to carpentry and masonry repairs. This year, we commenced with the 2nd phase of refurbishments which included:

  • Installation of new sanitary ware in all cloakrooms.
  • Removal of the existing bathtub and conversion into a fully equipped male toilet and bathroom.
  • Floor and wall tiling throughout cloakrooms.
  • Replacement of toilet fixtures and handwashing basins in the ladies’ and children’s cloakrooms.
  • Comprehensive painting and refurbishment of the affected areas.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, we donated:

  • 25 plastic chairs for nursing mothers to promote comfort and posture.
  • Snacks and soft drinks for hospitalised children.
  • Branded T-shirts, pens and bags for doctors, nurses and support staff as tokens of appreciation.

On 18th July 2025, during Nelson Mandela Day, the above project was commissioned by His Excellency, the late South African High Commissioner to Kenya, Johannes Mhalangu. The event was also graced by other dignitaries and partners including United Nations, South African Airways, Zereneti House and various diplomatic dignitaries.

This year, 22 dedicated employees from Beta Healthcare participated in the commemorative event, reaffirming our commitment to the community.

This initiative aligns with one of Nelson Mandela’s long-term goals of improving health, sanitation and dignity for vulnerable populations. We are proud to play our part in realizing this vision — not just on Mandela Day but every day.
