Colour, connection, and community with Grand Bay’s students

On Nelson Mandela Day, the Aspen Global corporate social responsibility team had the privilege of joining some 350 spirited students and staff of Grand Bay Primary School for a celebration that truly embodied Mandela’s legacy of unity, service, and joy! The day was filled with laughter, excitement, creativity, and meaningful moments that brought our community closer together.

Painting a brighter future

We kicked off the morning with a wall painting activity that transformed the school’s walls into vibrant canvases of hope and imagination. This creative endeavor was made even more special thanks to our incredible partners – students from the MGI School of Fine Arts, Imperial College, and Cosmopolitan College, who rolled up their sleeves and brought their artistic talents to life. Together with the children, they added splashes of color and inspiring messages that now greet everyone who walks along the school walls and through the school gates. It was more than just paint—it was a symbol of collaboration, pride, and shared purpose.

Sharing a slice of joy

After the artistic buzz, everyone gathered for a pizza lunch that turned into a lively picnic. Sharing a meal with the students was a simple yet powerful way to connect. The joy on their faces as they enjoyed their favorite slices and some juice reminded us that small gestures can leave lasting impressions.

Creative play and team spirit

The celebrations unfolded into a whirlwind of fun activities with every corner of the school buzzing with energy:

  • The students put up a fantastic show from dancing to storytelling, relating Nelson Mandela’s life and accomplishments.
  • Face painting pulled a large crowd and turned little faces into butterflies, hearts, and their favorite Spiderman, and other superheroes.
  • The drawing station gave students a chance to unleash their creativity by mixing colors and paints.
  • Football matches between teachers, students and the Aspen volunteers sparked friendly competition and revealed some hidden talents.

Living Mandela’s Message

Nelson Mandela once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” This day was our humble attempt to make a difference—by showing up, sharing joy, and celebrating the power of togetherness.

As we left Grand Bay Primary School, the painted walls and smiling faces were a reminder that Mandela’s spirit lives on in every act of kindness. Here’s to building bridges, one brushstroke and one shared moment at a time!
