Aspen Labs in Mexico elected to support Escuela Hogar del Perpetuo Socorro in Toluca on Mandela Day.

Nearly 120 employees from Aspen Labs tackled a range of projects at the home on July 18, 2012 to fulfill a variety of needs. Some activities that they engaged in included refurbishing, painting and decorating the installations, cleaning up the garden and fixing the playground. Small gifts were also bought for the children through generous donations received from Aspen Labs' employees.

The 45 young girls who attend Escuela Hogar del Perpetuo Socorro were on their summer vacation at the time, but a wonderful surprise lay in store for them when they returned to school.

The girls were welcomed back to a beautifully refurbished school on August 22 by Peter Erlbacher, Aspen Labs COO and Mr Martin Malan, Counsellor of the South Embassy and many other guests and Aspen employees. Mr Malan opened proceedings following which the girls were shown a video of the Mandela Day activities which had taken place in their absence. An attaché from the South African Embassy gave a short presentation on Nelson Mandela followed by a video clip on South Africa.

The girls were thrilled to be able to play safely in their remodelled playground and they were most grateful for their new school bags and other gifts.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Peter Erlbacher and Mr Malan reflecting the poignant quote:

"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way
in which it treats its children", Nelson Mandela.
