Sharing hope with abandoned children

It is known that nothing brings joy and genuine happiness like the simplicity found in a child – a playful smile, a giggle, or their little arms around your neck. Many children are blessed to grow up in caring homes where they experience an outpouring of love. Sadly though, not all children enjoy this privilege.

It is heartbreaking to see children wandering the streets, being battered by neglect, hunger, homelessness, and nature’s elements – wondering what it must feel like to be part of a loving family that cares for them. What is more heartbreaking though, is witnessing their broken spirits that only know a helpless and hopeless existence where they have stopped dreaming of a better tomorrow.

One can only hope that if more people experienced the emotional desperation in these eyes, that perhaps the world would have fewer abandoned children.

This is why Aspen Philippines has always demonstrated immense passion for less fortunate children who are desperately seeking to be loved and cared for.

During our 2023 Mandela Day celebration, volunteers from Aspen Philippines visited a humble home in the south of Metro Manila, Tahanan ni Hesus, Maria at Jose (House of Jesus, Mary and Joseph). This home cares for around 50 children aged four to 17, who are mostly abandoned or who barely receive any support from their family. This was our first visit to the orphanage, and we are hopeful that a more engaged partnership will develop so that we can contribute towards a brighter future for this future generation.

Aspen’s volunteers couldn’t wait for the formalities to conclude, and they were eager to show the children a good time! A day of celebrations and fun soon unfolded, and the children were equally keen to enjoy the coloring books, a delicious lunch, and loads of games. The highlight was a visit from Jollibee – the children’s icon of happiness in the Philippines – a rare treat for them indeed. The Aspen team also enjoyed a special treat of their own – the assurance that the love and care they showered over the children made an indelible mark and a world of difference to them.
