improving a home for mentally ill patients

Our Aspen Germany team made a meaningful Mandela Day difference for severely mentally ill patients.

We chose to support the Caritas Day Care Home in Munich which offers facilities for up to 120 visitors.

These visitors area assisted with daily tasks such as cooking and gardening. They are also offered breakfast and lunch, and activities such as music and gardening therapy.

Our primary aim was to create a more inviting experience for visitors by refurbishing selected areas of the Home. Eight Aspen volunteers, staff from the Home and visitors, repainted the cafeteria, kitchen and entrance area to create a more appealing environment.

We also refurbished the balcony, which helped establish a welcoming area for patients to relax and enjoy the natural environment.

We worked in four groups, and volunteers were able to select activities according to their preferences or abilities.

This enjoyable and fulfilling experience also provided an opportunity to foster existing relationships and establish new ones.

After completing the activities, we enjoyed lunch in the garden over fruitful discussions with the visitors and the Caritas staff.
