Canada – Quebec
One person can make an impact to others in need
Since 1987, Moisson Quebec has been the only food bank in the greater Quebec region and its mission is to act on food insecurity to improve the quality of life of people living in difficult socio-economic conditions. Moisson Quebec distribute to commodities to 135 accredited organizations.
They receive more than 312 000 food aid request per month, with some 84 395 people supported monthly in the greater Quebec area. This equates to over 5,8 million kilograms of food which is distributed annually, amounting to approximately 3.7 million request per year. The official report states that more than 4 million services were provided during the last full financial year.
Most of the goods collected by Moisson Quebec are provided through donations from local suppliers. These are often unsold products that may have manufacturing defects or incur minor breakages during transportation, short-dated stock or overproduction compared to demand.
By recovering these surplus products which would otherwise be discarded, Moisson Quebec reduces food waste while improving food security for the population.
Moisson Quebec can only count on 20 regular volunteers. Although demands for assistance have doubled since the Covid pandemic, they still only have the same number of resources. This is a major problem for them, which will hopefully resolve through additional citizens volunteering their time to this worthy cause.
They also make a positive contribution on the community by embracing the social reintegration of offenders and they welcome autistic volunteers thereby helping to develop their autonomy and socialisation.
On 23 July Aspen employees Nancy Regnier committed her Mandela Day efforts to Moisson Quebec for the second consecutive year. She enjoyed volunteering at the organisation where she sorted and prepared pallets of food for onward distribution. Thank you Nancy for selflessly displaying Aspen’s spirit of caring for others.
