Caring for Oss’ elderly and animals in need

Making a positive impact for dementia patients
Huize Katwijk takes care of some 100 elderly citizens at the Brabant Zorg in Oss. These residents, suffering from dementia, live in groups of six forming their own household where they eat together and share daily chores such as cooking, laundry, cleaning and others. This family unit also alleviates isolation which they would experience if they were housed independently. In addition, they are able to enjoy their sunset years with folk who have similar conditions, but who celebrate life by playing cards and other games while also listening to music.
Aspen Oss’ volunteers have displayed immense support for the elderly since the inception of the Group’s Mandela Day campaign in 2011. This year they took the residents out to enjoy a morning in the town centre following which they treated them to ice cream from a local parlour in Jan Cunenopark. The importance of excursions for these aged folk cannot be overstated – it offers them an opportunity to reintegrate into society and enjoy familiar surroundings which they are sadly cut off from.
Once back at Huize Katwijk, the team and residents feasted on a delicious meal served by their hosts. The afternoon’s Bingo session was another highlight and the wonderful prizes which were at stake quickly attracted curious eyes. Residents quickly gathered with staff and Aspen volunteers for a few hours of Bingo fun. During this joyful time the aged citizens sang traditional songs as punishment for false bingo calls which added to a very pleasant day for all who participated.

Collecting donations to treat stray animals
De Lappenmand, an animal shelter based in Maasland, is always in need of donations to offset costs for medicines, medical procedures and housing for stray animals. One of their primary forms of fundraising is from donated clothing, shoes and accessories which they sell. The teams dedicated 27 and 29 August to collect donations at Aspen’s De Geer and Moleneind manufacturing sites, and they were overwhelmed with the support received from employees. The collections were handed over that month and were gratefully received by Dierenasiel Maasland in Oss who expressed appreciation for Aspen’s efforts and generosity.
