Creating lasting value in the environments we serve
Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change begins with ordinary people choosing to act with compassion, purpose and a genuine commitment to serving others.
On Friday, 17 July 2026, as part of Aspen's global Mandela Day initiatives, employees at Aspen Holdings in Durban proudly joined thousands of colleagues across the Group in dedicating their 67 minutes to causes that create lasting value within the communities and environments we serve.
This year, our colleagues focused their efforts on advancing animal welfare and wildlife rehabilitation through partnerships with the Durban Animal Welfare Network (DAWN) and the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW).
The Paint a Kennel, Brighten a Shelter initiative saw teams transform ordinary kennels into vibrant, welcoming spaces designed to bring comfort to dogs awaiting their forever homes. Employees also donated pet food, bedding, toys and treats, supported by Aspen donations of R72 000 and R15 000 to DAWN and CROW, respectively, in support of their ongoing rescue, rehabilitation and relocation programmes.
The day extended beyond hands-on volunteering and saw employees engaging with representatives from DAWN and CROW as they shared insights into the vital work they do to rescue, rehabilitate and protect vulnerable animals. Employees were also educated on the appropriate response when encountering injured or displaced wildlife. Adding to the experience, puppies and dogs from DAWN spent time at Aspen Place, giving employees the opportunity to interact with them, learn more about responsible pet adoption and, perhaps, meet a future companion waiting for a loving home.
Beyond the painted kennels and generous donations, the initiative reflected the collective spirit of colleagues united by a common purpose. Every brushstroke, every contribution and every conversation reinforced the belief that even the simplest acts of kindness can leave a lasting impression on the lives of others.
